Michael Zvalaren is 40 years old and lives in Schuylkill Haven. Michael works 2 jobs - he is a full-time Kitchen Designer at MRD Lumber and a part-time adjunct history professor at the College of New Jersey, traveling a commute of 2 hours each way to teach his students. Mike is a devoted father of three.
Mike is passionate about improving healthcare accessibility and affordability in the 123rd, while also considering the potential economic benefits that could come from expanding educational programs and partnerships in the healthcare industry.
Zvaleren’s campaign identifies and focuses on a few key issues: the drug crisis, healthcare and social programs, the environment, infrastructure, and education and school reform.
Drug Crisis and Healthcare
Mike sees the drug crisis as a complex issue that is not solely a matter of law enforcement or economic condition, but rather a community health issue that requires a diverse approach including legal reform, community engagement, and better-funded social programs.
He is passionate about improving healthcare accessibility and affordability in the 123rd, while also considering the potential economic benefits that could come from expanding educational programs and partnerships in the healthcare industry.
Infrastructure and Environment
Mike will be an advocate for his district. Our tax dollars should go to things that literally keep us moving like roads and bridges. Our infrastructure is of the utmost importance. Flooding has become an issue in recent years in the 123rd. Investing tax dollars into improving sewer systems for our area could help prevent future devastation.
Mike takes pride in his community and will fight for affordable housing, economic development, and walkable towns.
Schuylkill County is home to some stunning vistas, natural landmarks, beautiful parks, and game lands. Mike believes it is important that we have these communal areas for everyone to enjoy as nature is an intrinsic value. He will work to establish realistic, clean energy sources and better regulate the public water.
Education and School Reforms
Mike sees the importance of practical and vocational education, which can be initiated early in a student's life, as seen in schools like Gillingham Charter School which focus on teaching life skills alongside academics.
Mike believes schools are to provide not only academic knowledge but also life skills and civic education, suggesting that educational policy, like the No Child Left Behind Act, has led schools to focus too much on standardized tests at the expense of a broader curriculum. He suggests that schools should offer a variety of programs, including free meals and vocational training, to help students become well-rounded individuals prepared for various aspects of life.
The importance of recognizing and valuing all types of skills and professions means challenging the notion of "unskilled" labor – all labor is skilled labor. This respect for all forms of work, along with an educational system that supports diverse paths, is vital for creating a society that appreciates and cultivates various talents and abilities.
