Sample Call Script
“Hello! My name is [YOUR NAME], and I am a constituent of Rep/Senator [LEGISLATOR’S NAME] in [YOUR CITY/TOWN]. I am reaching out today about the federal Medicare for All Act, which is going to be reintroduced this session in the [HOUSE/SENATE]. May I speak to the legislative aide in your office who handles healthcare policy?”
::: Wait to speak to the appropriate aide. Sometimes the receptionist will ask to take a message, but you should be clear that you want to have a conversation with someone from the office. If you leave a message, make sure it is specifically for the appropriate staffer.
Once you have the right person on the phone, repeat your introduction, identify yourself as a constituent, and launch into your request.:::
“I’m calling today to ask if Rep./Senator [YOUR LEGISLATOR’S NAME] is planning to sign on as an original co-sponsor of the Medicare for All Act, which would guarantee healthcare as a right to all Americans. This issue is important to me because [IN YOUR OWN WORDS, EXPLAIN WHY YOU CARE ABOUT THIS ISSUE]. Will the Rep/Senator become an original co-sponsor of the bill when it’s reintroduced this spring?”
::: You may get an answer at this point, but most often you will have to follow up. Make sure to get all the information you’ll need to reach them again.:::
“Thank you so much for speaking with me today, and I’d love to keep this conversation going. Can you give me your email, so I can follow up with more information on the bill? When can we expect the Rep/Senator to make a decision about cosponsoring?”
